Holy goodness, this project has been such a long time in the making. When we moved into our home three years ago I immediately claimed the formal dining room as my space. I set it up as my craft room, but at the time I didn’t own much in the way of furniture to make up a home office. I had some of the cubes from Michaels that you can put together in any configuration, but it was totally boring, completely lacking inspiration and kind of gave me a case of the sads when I looked around me.
But that is all in the past. I now have the home office of my dreams!
Each time that my husband deploys I love to change the house up in some fashion. Whether it be repainting a room, tiling a floor or adding wainscoting to my staircase, I bust my butt to create new spaces. In all honesty, I am sure that it is partly just me trying to keep myself busy, but it is also the perfect time to get things done the way I want them without having to ask his opinion! Haha!
But my office was totally for me, and I wanted it to reflect my personality and feel like a space that would invite creativeness. BLACK+DECKER has launched a fun “Your Big Finish” initiative that gave me the kick in the bottom that I needed to get this project finished once and for all. The BLACK+DECKER “Your Big Finish” movement is giving you an opportunity to win a cool $10,000 in cash and products and they might even put you and your newly finished product on a bill board right smack in the middle of Times Square. How cool is that?! There are weekly prizes as well, check out the list here.

As you can see from the picture above, my space was a hot mess. I had even picked out a paint color for the top portion of the walls months ago. It still didn’t get me motivated enough. For one thing, I wasn’t completely sure the color was right, for another thing, there were lots of holes in two of my walls where we had previously hung pictures and shelves. I HATE patching holes. Call me lazy (it’s totally earned in this case), but I just don’t want to spend that much time sanding. The solution? Hang bigger stuff over the holes! Genius!
I slapped some paint on the walls, mint on top, gray on the bottom and made a gallery wall on one of the walls with holes. I was careful with my placement of each piece, making sure to add not only things that I loved, but things that would cover those holes! After taking a step back and seeing the finished product, I am so in love with it! The bulletin board gives me tons of space to hang anything I need to see or remember, the embroidery hoop clock was a blast to make and gives some spunk and the quotes remind me that I really do love what I am working on in there…99% of the time!
What about the other wall with holes? Oh, I am so glad you asked, because I am obsessed with this wall as well! I cut a piece of pegboard to size and slapped that baby up there. The amount of storage is unbelievable and I love the big burst of color. I hung some Ikea baskets up and added a bit of wash tape to give them a bit more excitement and there you have it.
Because there is so much storage space on the pegboard wall, my china hutch (that I found on Craigslist) is now so much less cluttered and I can actually find things in there now.
I also found this sweet vintage school desk on Craigslist (it’s an addiction…and this desk was only $30…who could pass that up?!) to put in the corner for my tag along daughter to hang out at while I work.
And just because I love the look that this light fixture throws off, here is one last picture with the lights on:
I am so madly in love with this space now and I feel like it really represents who I am. And hey, it even matches my blog design! Big thanks to BLACK+DECKER and their “Your Big Finish” initiative for sponsoring this post. I needed that kick in the pants to FINALLY get this home office makeover done!

LOVE your light fixture! Great room makeover!!
Thanks so much, Morgan! I got the light fixture from World Market.
Absolutely beautiful. I especially love the little desk.
Thank you Debbie! My kids are always fighting over who gets to do their homework there.
I am so envious of your space! I’m still stuck at the kitchen table trying to craft, blog and eat meals, (sometimes all at the same time, LOL!). I love that bulletin board. Such a great way to get things off the table. And your gallery wall is gorgeous. Nice job!

Thank you so much, Sarah! I am so glad that our eat in kitchen is large enough for our table and the formal dining space was kind of redundant. It worked out well for me. 🙂
I like the bulletin board for the craft supplies. Cool ideas.
