Game Day Football Bread Bowl

Well, I think that it is safe to say that it is no surprise that I am a super fan of football.  I love it a silly amount and have chatted about it multiple times.  Remember my three bean hearty chili and my fantasy football party?  Or how about the beer candied bacon or the cheese stuffed beer pretzels?  Yeah, lets not discuss how poorly my 49ers played this season.

This girl just can’t talk about it without crying.  The wounds are still too fresh.

But I can talk about the fact that the SuperBowl is coming up super quickly!  Are you ready?  Are you planning a party, because if so, I have just the thing for you.  (I wish that I could insert some dramatic music in at this point)  Prepare yourself for a football bread bowl.  Oh yeah!

Fun, right?!  What fan wouldn’t love to chow down on their favorite dip in this awesome bread bowl?  And good news for you…it is stupidly simple to make and takes about zero prep work.  All you need are two refrigerated French loaf packages and one package of refrigerated crescent rolls.  Easy peasy!

Start by covering a baking sheet with aluminum foil then spread out your crescent rolls flat.  Squeeze the seams together to create one large rectangle of dough.  Next add a French loaf roll to the top of the crescent rectangle and bring the sides in towards the center to form one side of the football.  Repeat on the opposite end with the other French loaf.  Pinch the seams of the French loaves together so that they are joined, then cut the excess crescent roll dough from the outer edges and remove it.  Cut two small strips from the leftover crescents to serve as the laces and set on the inner corners of the football.  Brush the entire thing with a whisked egg white to achieve that pretty sheen when it is cooked.

Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes and fill with your favorite dip.  I used a scrumptious cream cheese bean dip (and I will be sharing the recipe with you all on Monday).  For an added bonus I cut up a couple of slices of mozzarella cheese and laid them over the dip as laces.  And I’ll be honest with you here, I wasn’t sure if we would eat the bread or not, but I have to tell you that I absolutely loved the taste of dipping the bread into the bean dip and forgoing chips.  It was delicious!  PS: this bread bowl holds about an 8×8 baking dish worth of dip.

So if you are looking for a fun way to serve your favorite dip for game day, give this a try.  You will love it!  And if you are looking for a few pointers for the rules of the game, be sure to check out my football 101 post.  It is a great newbies guide.

And I’ll just keep looking forward and holding out hope for a better season for my team next year.  At least until then I can still gobble up the game day treats!
