Change up Your Baskets Each Season (the super simple secret to how I made this starfish basket!)

Summer is on its way and with it comes my love of all things beachy.  We have lived in the south for a long time now (our previous duty station was in Georgia), and we have most certainly become accustomed to our beach time.  In fact we were just in Virginia Beach last week, soaking up the rays cold wind, but enjoying the beach all the same.  My kiddos have spent more time in the ocean than they have in swimming pools, and collecting beach decor brings all of those fun memories into our home.  I try not to go overboard; some sand here, a shell or two there, but I am obsessed with starfish.

I decided to add some to a simple weaved basket that was lying around in my craft stash, but it is such a super easy trick that I wanted to share it with all of you as well.  The best part about this trick is that you can use it year round to add any decor, or even letters, that you want to completely customize your baskets for every season!

Okay, so the “trick” really isn’t a secret and is so darn easy that I am kicking myself for not having done this sooner.  To decorate your own basket, you will need a basket that is weaved, your decor to add and some twine.

Cut a two foot long piece of twine and set your decor where you would like it added.  To make life simpler, I like to add a bit of scotch tape to the ends of my twine so that it does not come unraveled.  Find spaces between the weaves of the basket to thread your twine through, and essentially sew your decor item in place, making sure to leave enough twine leftover on both ends to make a knot.  I doubled up my “stitches,” but that was more for aesthetics than anything else.

When you have your item in place, tie a knot on the inside of the basket, leaving yourself enough space to cut the knot for when you are ready to change out the decor.

That’s it, you are ready to decorate!  My basket took me less than 10 minutes to make and I had all of the supplies on hand, so it was more or less free as well.  Yay!  This has filled my head with so many ideas of how I want to customize each and every basket that is in my house right now though.  So much inspiration!

I’m currently working on a laundry room update, and I can’t wait to go pick up some of those small wood letters from the craft store and use this trick to really make each basket my own.

What would you put on your basket?  Would you change them out each season or stick to one thing that you know you love?  Tell me about it in the comments below, I love to hear from you!
