For years I have been shy about wearing statement jewelry. I have hidden behind my dainty chains with small pendants, afraid that statement necklaces would only draw attention to my too shy self. But there has been a transformation within myself that has occurred over the last few years. I have come into my own, I feel so confident and happy in my own skin and I love who and where I am right now. I don’t mind making a statement now, in fact I really enjoy it! And what better way to make a statement than with a DIY necklace. Colors and sizes are totally customize-able and the possibilities are endless. For this necklace I used $2 worth of washers and ribbon and spray paint that I had on hand.
Supplies Needed:
60 inches of 5/8 in ribbon
15 (3/8 in) washers
24 (5/16 in) washers
spray paint (optional)
I chose to paint my washers a fun mint color, so I quickly sprayed one coat one the front side. One side of the washer will be shiny and one side will be matte. It does not matter which you choose to use as the “front” side, just make sure that you pay attention and keep them all the same.
Start by threading the first washer onto the middle of the ribbon.
Now thread the second washer on, making sure that the right sides of the washers are facing each other (so in my case the blue side was facing the blue side).
Here comes the slightly tricky part: take the end of the ribbon on the right side and thread it into the first washer.
As you pull taut, the second washer will face the correct way.
Now thread the end of the ribbon on the right side back through the second washer.
You can choose to use different sizes of washers, like I did or you can keep them all uniform…it’s totally up to you. I chose to use my larger washers in the middle of my necklace and have the sides be the smaller washers.
Repeat these steps until you have your necklace the size / length that you desire and you are all set. I would recommend that you use a lighter and melt the ends of the ribbon so that it does not fray.
Wear it on it’s own or layer it with other necklaces for a fun and funky look.
