Adorable DIY Christmas Canvas

canvas

This is probably my favorite project of the season!  I just love the way that this Christmas canvas turned out and I can’t wait to share it with you, so here we go… A couple of weeks ago I found a painted canvas sign at Hobby Lobby that was very cute, but it was using muted traditional holiday colors.  I decided that I wanted to replicate the feel of the canvas, but I wanted to give it more of a fun, modern vibe.  Lately I have been really loving the bright greens, pinks and blues that I’ve been seeing around, and I wanted to make this sign to match my ornament garland and my glitter trees as well.  So I dug through my craft paints and found some great choices and got to work.

You will need:

canvas

paints in your colors of choice

gem stickers (ornaments) in your color of choice

ribbon or burlap for edge

I started by painting the canvas with one light coat of a medium brown.  I knew that I would be painting over the brown so I didn’t worry about perfection.  I just wanted the base layer so that my cream would look a little aged and less than perfect.

Once the brown was dry I brushed a quick coat of cream on top.  Again, I wanted to have a bit of an aged look, so I used a light hand and left some spots lighter than others.  Next up was making a stencil using my Silhouette, but you could absolutely free hand this as well.  In fact, it might have worked better because some of my lettering bled a bit.  My hubby actually helped me with my design as I was going to be boring and leave everything centered and perfect.  He convinced me to try things off center and see what happens, and he was right.  I love the unique look to the lettering and the tree in the background.  So take your time and play around with your design until you find what makes you happy.  Once you do, go ahead and paint it in your color of choice.  I used one coat on all of my lettering, but two coats on my tree.

After the paint is dry, add some ornaments to your tree by hot gluing some gem stickers on.  I just randomly applied them with no rhyme or reason.  Because I has purchased a deeper canvas, with more space on the sides, I chose to cover mine with some sequined ribbon in a bright pink.  I stretched it slightly and applied hot glue all the way around, leaving the ends of the ribbon to meet up on the bottom so that it will not be seen.

I really just adore the fun bright colors and feel like it adds so much excitement to my mantle.  And here is what the original inspiration from Hobby Lobby looked like: (thanks to the hubby for holding it up!)

And here it is looking adorable on my mantel.  And check out the tutorials for my glitter trees, ornament garland and the ornament display as well.
