Chocolate and beer go together like, well, like chocolate and peanut butter. The flavors combine to create an outrageously delicious burst of flavor. I’ve heard that the malt in the beer intensifies the chocolate flavor, making a brownie (which is totally yummy all on it’s own) an over the top treat that will leave you wanting more. I bought a six pack of Guinness the other day and have been enjoying adding it to some of my recipes here and there. I am using the guise of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day as my excuse, but truth be told, I love the flavor that beer adds to food. You may remember my quick and easy beer bread and I hope that you’ll come back on Friday to get a peek at my next beer infused recipe!
After my extensive and exhaustive three minutes of internet research, it appears that there aren’t a whole lot of recipes out there using Guinness in brownies. Because I was super impatient and didn’t want to go through a trial and error period I decided to use one of the recipes that I found instead of coming up with my own. I saw variations of this recipe on many sites, and therefore am not sure where it originated from, but once you take a bite you won’t care where it came from any more. You’ll just care about shoving more in your mouth…please tell me that’s not just me!
- 6 Tbs butter, cut into cubes
- 8 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
- ¾ cup white chocolate chips
- 1 cup flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup Guinness Stout beer*
- 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
- Preheat the oven to 375*
- Prepare a 9 x 13 dish with non stick spray or line with aluminum foil.
- In a medium bowl, combine flour, salt and cocoa. Set aside.
- Melt butter, bittersweet chocolate and white chocolate over low heat in a double boiler. Stir constantly until melted and remove from heat.
- Beat eggs and sugar in a large mixing bowl until fluffy and light, about three minutes. Add chocolate mixture and beat until well combined.
- Add flour mixture to chocolate mixture and beat until combined. Whisk in Guinness by hand (mixture may seem thin, don't worry).
- Pour into prepared pan and sprinkle with semi sweet chocolate chips. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
- *Please note that this works best when beer is at room temp. Pour slowly to avoid foam, but if you do get foam, just spoon it off the top. Do not include foam in the measurements.
I dare you to eat just one. If you do, please don’t tell me about it because my willpower is just not that strong and my ego can’t take that hit. 🙂 I’ll just stick with the thought process that life is short and dessert should come first.
