Disney Villain Hair Bows

From the time that I was a little girl I have adored Disney villains.  Ursula from The Little Mermaid sucked me in and won me over.  There was just something about her scheming, evil ways that made me want to know more about her.  And don’t even get me started on Gaston, one of my all time favorite Disney characters period!  I was overjoyed when Maleficent was released so I could have the chance to see the other side of the story.  And now I am getting my kids into the villain love while watching the Descendants!  We watched the live premiere on The Disney Channel on July 31st, but my kiddos loved it so much that we ended up purchasing both the DVD and the soundtrack as well so they can get their fill.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, Descendants is set around the children of some of our favorite Disney characters.  It follows Mal (Maleficent’s daughter), Evie (daughter of the Evil Queen), Carlos (Cruella De Vil’s son) and Jay (son of Jafar) as they try to find their own path and decide if they want to be good or evil.

My daughters were completely fascinated by the children wearing similar color schemes as that of their parents, so we decided it would be fun to make hair bows that would coordinate with each of the villains ensembles.

While I was picking up the movie and soundtrack at Walmart, I raided their ribbon aisle and grabbed some hair clips, a few buttons and some headbands as well.

There are so many variations on how to make hair bows, but I chose to go for the no sew boutique method.  For this method, you’ll need the ribbon of your choice (1 1/2 to 2 inch wide is generally the easiest to use), hot glue, scissors, ruler, fray check or a lighter, hair clip and any added accessory.

Start by cutting your ribbon to length (anywhere between 8-12 inches makes for a great bow).  Use fray check or seal the ends with a lighter by quickly holding the end to the flame.

Mark the middle of the ribbon and add a line of hot glue right next to the mark.  Fold the end over onto the glue and allow to dry.  Repeat on the other side.

Flip the ribbon over so that the seam is on the back.  Lightly fold in half and add a dollop of hot glue and allow to dry.

Fold the top portion over to the back and add another dab of glue, allowing it to dry.  Repeat on the other end.  Fluff the ribbon out.

You can glue multiple bows together to create more fullness or you can finish it off by adding a thin ribbon around the middle, glueing it together in the back.  Now add a clip and you are all set!

As you can guess, there are endless ways to create these hair bows and you can style them to match any character you could think of.  They are so much fun!
