Every year for Christmas I try to come up with a new idea for a homemade gift for the grandmas that the kids can make. It has been progressively getting harder as I feel as though I am running out of creative ideas. This year, I wanted to capture my children’s adorable little kid handwriting and make it into a keepsake that the grandmas can proudly display. I have seen many shops on Etsy selling spectacular handmade name necklaces, but I was trying to keep my gifts on budget and I wanted to make them personally. So if you’ve been a regular reader, you can probably guess what I did next…I took a trip to Hobby Lobby. I found some small acrylic blocks and matching sized pendants in the jewelry making section and away I went. Here is the list of supplies you’ll need to make your own necklace:
Patterned paper
Modge Podge
Super Glue
Acrylic Blocks
Pendants
I already had patterned paper, modge podge and super glue on hand so I started by getting my daughter to write her name on a piece of paper that I cut to the size of the block. After she had done that, I waited a minute to make sure that the ink was dry and then I generously applied modge podge to the front side of the paper (the side that she had written on). I then laid the acrylic block down on top of the paper and left it to dry for a couple of minutes. Once that was dry, I used my super glue to attach the block to the pendant. I rubbed a small amount of glue inside the pendant and set the block in, making sure to apply some pressure. All that’s left to do now is to let it all dry and hang it from a chain, and you’ve got yourself a totally personalized, super cute way to capture a piece of your kid’s childhood forever. I know that the grandmas in my family are just going to love these necklaces, and I bet that you know someone who would as well! The total for this project was $3.50 (supplies were 50% off at Hobby Lobby) for two necklaces, but I have 6 acrylic blocks left over for future projects. Can’t beat that price!
