There have been a lot of pins on Pinterest lately showing a bunch of adorable ornament garlands and I just love them. I kept pining them myself and I have finally broken down and made one of my own. It wasn’t nearly as challenging or time consuming as I had feared that it might be and it is totally customizable by choosing whatever color and style of ornament that suits your décor. Being the cheapskate that I am, I headed to Walmart to buy the highest quality most economical option that I could find in the bright fun colors that I was looking for. I ended up buying three packages of 41 ornaments each (total of 123) for $8.97 each. I discovered that with the size of the ornament that I used, each package of 41 ended up being about 22 inches long as garland. So assuming that you are using an average sized ornament, you can expect the same measurements and can do the math to figure out exactly how many ornaments you will need. Aside from the ornaments, all you will need to complete this project is a thin ribbon (I used a 1/4 inch green ribbon).
To start the garland, thread the ribbon through the loop on the top of the ornament where you would normally attach the hook to hang it on the tree with. Start with one ornament at first and tie a knot around the top so that your ornaments do not fall off while you are working. Now just thread your ornaments in whatever pattern that you would like, letting them fall into place on their own. I discovered that if you try to push or move the ornaments for a tighter fit that they will pop off of their hooks. I did not have a single one pop off after I just let them fall into place on their own. Now if you are a bit OCD such as myself, you will probably spend a silly amount of time trying to make a pattern, but don’t bother. As I mentioned, the ornaments tend to go where they want to and your futile attempts at making sure that the colors are where you want them are just wasted efforts. But don’t worry, it will turn out beautifully anyway! When you reach your last ornament, simply tie a knot around the hook just like you did with the very first one. To hang mine, I went back in and made a loop with my ribbon through the hooks of both the first and last ornaments.
I worked on my garland while watching TV with my hubby and it took me less than an hour long show to complete. So now I have a fun garland in the size and colors that I needed for less than $30. I just love the character that it gives my mantle!

I love this and have everything to make this and I am very excited. But I have one question how did you attach the garland to your fireplace?
Ruth,
I tied some loops made of ribbon to each end and hung those with packing tape. I had a reader who made a garland who said that she used small Command hooks. The garland ends up being a bit heavier than you would suspect, so Command hooks are probably the best bet just to make sure that it all stays where you want it. Let me know if you have any more questions.
What are commsnd hooks?
Hi Ruth,
So sorry, Command hooks are the most fantastic invention since sliced bread! I use them all over my home. Here is a link to their products: http://www.command.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/NACommand/Command/
