DIY Sugared Pecans

Pecans

Have you walked through a shopping mall lately and passed the kiosk that sells warm, candied fruits and nuts?  You know the ones…they prey on your hunger and know that you have to eat while walking because there is only so much time in the day and not long until Christmas.  It’s like they pipe their amazingly enticing odor through the mall’s central air so that the moment you walk through the door your mouth starts to water.  Passing those kiosks is pure torture for me because I am absolutely addicted to sugared pecans.  If I smell the cinnamon sugary sweetness I have to stop and buy some.  Or at least I did, until I realized that I could recreate the unmistakable scent and taste in my own home.  Now I can have warm sugared pecans in my own home whenever the craving strikes for a fraction of the cost.

Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Serves: 1 lb
Ingredients
  • 1 lb pecan halves
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1½ tap salt
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 tsp water
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 300* and prepare a cookie sheet by lining with aluminum foil.
  2. Combine sugar, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl, reserving ¼ cup. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk egg white and water until frothy. Fold in pecans and add sugar mixture. Stir until pecans are coated.
  4. Spread onto prepared cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with reserved sugar mixture and stir to coat.
  6. Store in an airtight container.

This makes a perfect afternoon snack or a lovely gift for a friend or neighbor.  Just fill up a pretty jar and tie a ribbon around it and it’s ready to go.  Much easier than heading to the crowded mall and elbowing your way through to that kiosk!
