Did you ever make dirt pies as a child? I loved to shape and pat the mud and drag bring my mother over to ooh and aah over my fantastic, one of a kind creation. She never seemed quite as excited at the prospect of eating it as I did though. Now that I am a mother, I understand that the thought of eating dirt is one that can turn your stomach, but there are ways around that. My kiddos were on spring break this past week and were more than willing to get into the kitchen with me and whip us some cupcakes. We decided to take them to the next level though by making them flower pot dirt cupcakes. It was super fun and easy…the kids did all of the work aside from the actual baking.
Supplies needed:
marshmallows
small suckers (we used Dum Dums)
white chocolate chips
chocolate Graham crackers
small terra cotta pots
chocolate cupcakes and frosting
We were happy to find that our cupcakes fit perfectly into some terra cotta pots that we had on hand. I’m not sure how terra cotta pots are sized, but the ones that we used are 2 1/2 inches tall with a 3 inch mouth. The kids used a rolling pin to break up the Graham crackers to create the “dirt.”
After our cupcakes had cooled and been frosted we covered them with our “dirt” and got to work making our flowers. They were much simpler than we anticipated and the end result was so much fun! Start by cutting a marshmallow into small slices. We used our kitchen shears and were able to get about 6 slices per marshmallow. Make sure to cut from the smooth end. Once you have your slices cut, melt a small amount of white chocolate chips to serve as glue. Use a butter knife to place a small dab of white chocolate onto one end of the marshmallow slice. Press it onto the sucker and continue working all the way around the sucker. Allow to dry. Once dry, insert the sucker stick into your cupcake and enjoy!
My son was not as excited by the flower cupcakes as my girls were. He opted for some gummy worms instead.

Natalie, you can find them at most craft stores. I believe that I bought mine at Hobby Lobby.
