Ghoulishly Fun Halloween Dinner

We had a hard weekend here at my house.  My husband deployed on Saturday afternoon and the kids and I were all feeling pretty down and out and basically throwing ourselves a big ol’ pity party.  We needed something fun and we needed it quick!

Eating eyeballs changed their moods and brought smiles (and a few “eew, that is so gross” comments) to our otherwise quite house.

Yes, that’s right…we ate eyeballs.

Okay, well not really, but the kids were fooled for a minute by the olives!  With Halloween literally right around the corner, why not add a ghoulishly fun meal to the menu this week?  It is super simple, quick and you’ve probably got all of the ingredients on hand.

My kiddos love spaghetti.  It is one of the very few meals that everyone can agree upon and enjoy, so we tend to have it a couple of times a month.  Adding a salad and some fresh bread makes a complete meal that I can have on the table in less than 30 minutes and I love that!  The only additional time needed to transform our ordinary spaghetti into a tricky treat was to add some purple food coloring to our noodles as soon as they were drained and mix it up well.  I will warn you though…it takes a lot of food coloring to achieve the rich, dark colors that we typically associate with Halloween, so be prepared.  Once you’ve got your noodles colored, plop on some spaghetti sauce and throw a couple of olive eyeballs right on top!

My kids loved eating Halloween spaghetti and it really cheered everyone up a bit.  This is perfect to add some extra fun to the week and a great way to sneak in a real meal, as opposed to more candy and treats, under the guise of celebrating.

What do you think, would your kids enjoy eating eyeballs this week?

  1. Deployment sucks! That first day is absolutely the pits! In fact, the first week is! But I love your idea for keeping your kids’spirits high! Hopefully your husbands deployment will pass quickly and no drama will occur for you during it!

  2. I used to make my kids orange mashed potatoes and green corn for dinner on Halloween. I might have to try this one now for my grand kids.
