There are so many recipes that I love to bake this time of year that use pumpkin pie spice. I was getting ready to make my favorite pumpkin cranberry bread the other day and realized as I rummaged through my cabinets that I was completely out of it. The worst part was that I had somehow returned the empty canister to my spice rack so I had some false hope for a fraction of a second.
I was bummed, thinking that a trip back to the grocery store was imminent when I decided to look at the list of ingredients on the empty container. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and sulfiting agents. Well, minus that last one I had all of those right there staring back at me. And that is how I discovered how simple it is to make your own pumpkin pie spice. Chances are super good that you have all of the necessary ingredients in your cupboard as well!
- 2 Tbsp cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp ginger
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp allspice
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
- Add all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
- Store in an airtight container.
Measure out ingredients and combine and mix well.
I chose to store my pumpkin pie spice in a small Mason jar which could also be a perfect little homemade gift for friends and neighbors. You know, since tomorrow is November! How in the world did that happen?! Either way, it’s time to start thinking about DIY gifts!
A small square of burlap adds a touch of whimsy to the lid.
Are you like me and feel as though you go through pumpkin pie spice by the pound during the fall and winter? If so, I really recommend that you give this a shot. It is a dead ringer for the store bought variety at a fraction of the cost and it might even save you a trip back to the grocery store!
