Holy cow, summer is flying by for us. My kids go to a year round school, so the last few weeks have been spent uniform and supply shopping. Blech. To keep the spirit of summer alive, we decided to go outside into the blistering heat and create some fun mini masterpieces with squirt guns. It was so much fun for all of us and the kids have a lasting piece of summer that they can hang on to when they go back to school soon.
This is one of those posts that I question about sharing, because it seems so simple and doesn’t really require a tutorial, but we had such a blast doing it that I wanted to let you all in on it too so you and your kiddos can enjoy it as well.
I’ve seen these done before using liquid watercolors, but my local craft store didn’t have them and I don’t have the patience to wait for Prime shipping. I grabbed some food coloring and told the kids to wear clothes that they didn’t mind ruining. Of course their ideas of “work clothes” and my ideas differed a little. 🙂
We loaded up our squirt guns with multiple colors and headed outside. I intentionally grabbed this large, cheap pack of guns at Walmart so that we could have a plethora of colors to work with, and I am glad that I did. We needed fewer refills and were able to customize without having to first empty a squirt gun, then head back in the house to mix up a new color.
Because our colors were not washable, I had the kids place their papers on the grass to “paint.” I definitely didn’t want to even test it to see if these colors would come off of my sidewalk. Try them out in different positions though. We taped ours to trees and got an entirely new outcome. My kids loved to keep it on the ground and let the paint pool then dump it off. They were fascinated by the marks left by doing it that way.
All in all, this super fun activity cost me less than $4 for an hours worth of entertainment for my kids. They all brought their paintings in and plan to use them to decorate their upstairs hallway. If you are looking for a great way to entertain your family for a bit on a budget, I highly recommend this squirt gun painting!
