My hubby and I were so incredibly lucky to experience a trip to Europe last fall. We went to five countries and had a blast in all of them, but Germany was by far our favorite. We both love the culture, the language and the beer! Oh the beer…
Our trip was last minute (we found out a month in advance), yet we naively decided to try to get in to a tent for the opening day of Oktoberfest. Keep in mind that the reservations are usually booked out a year in advance. Well, wouldn’t you know some beginners dumb luck (and standing in the right line) found us two seats in the most awesome beer tent where we drank far more beer than feels humanly possible, danced on benches with strangers who spoke no English and laughed hysterically when the all German band played “YMCA.”
To put it mildly, it was one of the best days of our lives and we will remember it forever. And forever miss that beer!
Oktoberfest beers are all from local Munich breweries and are fresh on tap. There are no words to describe how delicious it is, and I feel as though since we’ve been home I have been chasing that flavor. And it’s just not happening for me. So next best thing…start mixing things with beer. Another little tip I picked up in Germany.
Lager and lemonade go hand in hand and I feel saddened that I didn’t stumble upon this until I am in my thirties. Just think of all that time missed! 🙂
I got the idea to try combining beer and lemonade after falling in love with cola-weizens on our trip. All it is is half Coke and half hefeweizen combined. It is so yummy! I have been buying up Paulaner (maybe because I’m still missing Munich?) and mixing my own at home to enjoy with my hubs, but with summer approaching, it seemed time to try a new mix up.
For the lager and lemonade, I used a local craft beer, but any light beer would work well. Fill your glass halfway with lemonade and pour the beer directly on top, at an angle to avoid too much head. No need to stir or mix, just enjoy!
These are so perfect for a hot sunny day, and you can always pre fill mason jars, top with a lid and throw a bunch in a cooler for a get together. Yummy!
And for real, if you are lucky enough to get to Munich during Oktoberfest, make sure to have a beer for me!
