People who know me well seem to be endlessly entertained by the fact that I can be both extremely frugal and at the same time I can spend money like there is no tomorrow. And I could not tell you what factors decide which items I will be a total cheapskate about and which I will throw money at. Luckily for me, when I feel like being a penny pincher I know I can always head to my local dollar store. I am constantly amazed at the random and exciting scores I find while browsing the aisles. And even better is the ability to easily buy my children off with the promise of a $1 treasure if they behave and let Mommy peruse the store. Which brings me to the topic of this post…my $10 Halloween mantle.
I’ve got a few things happening here. First, you may recognize my spooky twig tree from my earlier post. I also found my light up ghost clearanced at Michaels for $19.99 last week. But I digress…back to the mantle…
I found each of these items at my friendly local dollar store. Those beautiful ceramic pumpkins? Yep, $1 each. The adorable wood signs? You guessed it, $1 each. That creepy mask? Uh-huh, also $1. I just put it on a covered vase that was already on my mantle. I did spray paint the pumpkin sitting on the candle holder. For some reason, the “carve able” pumpkins that I found have an unfortunate seam right across the middle. I sprayed the pumpkin with some leftover Looking Glass spray paint to try to conceal the seam a bit.
I’ve also got some dollar store finds decorating my entry as well.
My skull, spider, black pumpkins, rats and crow were all $1 apiece. Not too bad for a quick transformation.
Do you frequent your local dollar stores? Do you seem to have luck or do you strike out?
I have had fantastic success at my local dollar store with coconut bras and large novelty sunglasses.
