When did I fall so far behind the times that I didn’t realize a waffle iron is being used for cooking basically everything except waffles? Ugh, I am getting so old!
While browsing Pinterest a couple of weeks ago I kept seeing all of these foods pop up that were cooked with a waffle iron…hashbrowns, cinnamon rolls, pizza inside a biscuit…
Say what?! I immediately felt as though my whole life was a lie and I knew that I needed to create my own waffle iron, non-waffle recipe.
Once I started digging through the fridge, I realized I had lots of varieties of cheese and thus the absolute best ever grilled cheese sandwich was born!
Making a grilled cheese sandwich is basically cooking 101, so I won’t bore you with the details other than to say that as an adult, I like to add some fancier cheeses. American cheese is just something that we don’t eat in our home, but we go through cheddar like there is no tomorrow. So I used some cheddar and a little gruyere and it was fantastic! I will admit to always putting more than one slice of cheese in my sandwiches. I know that some people stick to one, but for me, the more the merrier. And don’t skimp on the butter on the outer sides as it makes the sandwich extra yummy!
The sandwich cooked for about 3 minutes in my waffle iron and came out nice and crunchy on the outside and soft and gooey in the center. It was pure perfection! I am planning to try my personal favorite panini on the waffle iron now. I use light mayo, cheddar, thin slices of apple and sliced turkey. It’s super delicious.
I’ve got to know, have you cooked anything other than waffles on your waffle iron? What was it and how did it turn out? I’m ready to try all sorts of new things!
Love the little indentations the waffle maker makes on this grilled cheese. I wonder how it would taste with some maple syrup on it 😛
